Solar Rhythm: Samhain 2024
The ancient people who worked with the Wheel considered the four cross-quarter days of the Wheel of the Year very important. Honored by many cultures as a sacred time, Samhain (pronounced Sah-win or Sah-ween) is also known as Halloween, All Souls Night, and All Hallows Eve. It is celebrated on October 31, with the Day of the Dead or All Souls Day following November 1 or 2. This year, the exact point falls on November 6, Eastern time.
The new moon in Scorpio falls on November 1 this year, making any time between October 31 and November 7 a powerful time for deep inner work and ceremony. Download a Samhain PDF to help you plan for this timing.
The medieval Irish word Samhain means summer's end. It's celebrated as the last of three harvest festivals (Lughnasad being the first; Autumnal Equinox, the second) as the growing season in the Northern Hemisphere comes to a close.
Samhain, the time of year when the days grow shorter, and the earth begins its deep rest, has always been a powerful moment for reflection and honoring the cycles of life. For ancient cultures and many of us today, this cross-quarter day in the Wheel of the Year serves as a bridge between the worldsāa time when the "veil" between the physical and spiritual realms feels thin, and we can connect with those who came before us.
At Samhain, people traditionally honor their loved ones and ancestors with candle-lit altars, favorite foods, or even a special place set at the table. It's a time to pause and express gratitude for the gifts they've passed down, to feel the thread of connection with those who've transitioned yet remain part of us.
Samhain encourages us to slow down and turn inward. Just as the natural world is winding down, we're invited to take stock of what has grown in our lives and reflect on what's no longer needed. It's a chance to let goāwhether it's clutter, old habits, or beliefs that weigh us downācreating a hopeful space for new beginnings when the light returns at Winter Solstice.
During this time, we can nurture the dreams and ideas that need more time to grow, allowing them to gestate in the quiet of winter. Samhain is an invitation to honor our journey, connect with what truly matters, and prepare for a fresh start in the coming months, inspiring us to bring our dreams to life.
